SOR first caught wind on Nelson at the 2010 Chuck Mound combine where he dominated the competition as an eighth grader. As a freshman at St. Peters, head coach Rich Hansen said that Nelson "is going to be a good one". Nelson then transfered to DePaul Catholic for his sophomore year.
